Introduction
Thank you for purchasing the Belkin Components Bitronics DataSwitch Kit!
Finally, you can share parallel-port devices and printers like never before.
Because its electronic, its completely safe for all printers and does not void
your printers warranty. And, since it operates like a manual switch, no
software is required or power adapter needed. Its advanced yet simple
design offers full IEEE 1284 communication in all modes for any and all
parallel port devices. Share your parallel-port Zip® Drive between two PCs,
or use a Laser Printer and a scanner on the same parallel port. All you have
to do is press a button.

Hardware Installation
The F1U123 Bitronics DataSwitch has three DB25 ports for connecting to
the devices and/or computers. Depending on your application, the Bitronics
DataSwitch Kit can be used in two different ways:
a)
One PC to two parallel port devices
Two PCs to one parallel port device
b)
Please refer to the figure below for your application. Note that the included
F2A047-06 cable can be used in any instance shown below.

Usage
The Bitronics DataSwitch has two buttons on top shaped like arrows. When
depressed, these buttons instantly connect” the middle DB25 port (common)
to the port adjacent to the button. An LED next to the button indicates which
port is currently active.
To select Port A, firmly depress the button next to
port A until the LED next to the button illuminates.
The connection between Port A and the
common port will remain active until
Port B is selected.

Notice for Plug-and-Play Device Users
Plug-and-Play is a new technology that allows the operating system to
automatically recognize a device when the system boots up. However, if
the Plug-and-Play device is connected to the F1U123, it must be
“connected” to the PC when booting up for the operating system to
recognize it. This means that in Diagram “a”, the port the Plug-and-Play
device is connected to must be selected, or in Diagram “b”, the PC that is
booting up must be selected. Examples of Plug-and-Play devices are
removable-media hard disks, Parallel-to-SCSI adapters, and some brands
of scanners.
Recommended Cabling
Belkin recommends the use of IEEE 1284-compliant cables for maximum
signal transfer and integrity, especially in high-speed EPP and ECP
modes. Below are the three IEEE 1284-compliant cables Belkin
Components manufactures:
F2A046-XX
F2A047-XX
F2A045-XX
Belkin Pro Series IEEE 1284-compliant parallel printer
cable, DB25 M/Cent 36M
Belkin Pro Series IEEE 1284-compliant parallel cable,
DB25 M/M, straight-through
Belkin Pro Series IEEE 1284-compliant parallel
printer cable, DB25 M/MicroCent 36M*
*Used in connecting to a HP 5P/6P or any parallel printer
that has a Micro Centronics 36 connector.
The “XX” is the length of cable in feet. Hence, an F2A047-06 is a
6 ft.1.8m cable.

Troubleshooting
A Cables
Make sure you are NOT using file-transfer cables.
Special cables used in DOS Interlink, LapLink®, or Win95 Direct Cable
Connection file-transfer cables are not wired “straight-through”. In
these cables, not all the pins are used, therefore they will not function
at all. Belkin’s F2A047-xx cables, such as the one included in this
package, are recommended for 100% reliable operation.
Make sure you are using high-quality IEEE 1284-compliant cables.
Most new printers and parallel port devices demand the use of these
cables mainly for signal integrity especially in high-speed data transfers.
Lower quality cables do not feature the required double-shielded and
twisted pairs, thereby increasing the chances of communication errors.
The special construction of Belkin’s IEEE 1284-compliant cables not only
reduce interference and retain a high signal-to-noise ratio, but also
provide a lifetime of superior performance.
Make sure your cables are not too long.
Data transferred through the parallel port is reliable with 1.8m cables. If
IEEE 1284-compliant cables are used, 3m cables may also be used.
However, cables longer than 3m begin to degrade the signal, and signal
loss is apparent by the much lower transmission speed and increased
errors in the application.

Troubleshooting (continued)
B. Application Errors
Check that the proper port is selected.
To achieve a link between the PC and the device, the LED of the correct
port must be illuminated.
Connect the devices directly to the PC.
If the device does not properly respond when connected directly to the
PC, the device may be damaged, not the F1U123 switch. Consult with the
manufacturers tech support for assistance.
Try rebooting the computer.
By rebooting, the operating system checks the ports for the presence of
the device. Make sure the correct port is selected so that the drivers are
loaded, and the device is fully operable.
Not enough power is being supplied to the switch.
The F1U123 does not require power in normal instances. However, some
parallel port devices and computers do not provide enough power to the
switch. Therefore, an optional power adapter must be used. We
recommend using Belkin part number F5B001-PWR. It is a special 7VDC
200mA power supply, and simply plugs into the power connector on the
side of the F1U123 switch. Use of other power supplies providing more
than 7VDC will significantly compromise the life of the switch.
